🥊 Lionel Rose
Boxer Lionel Rose grew up at Jacksons Track near Drouin before becoming world bantamweight champion. In Tokyo in 1968 he defeated Japan’s Fighting Harada, a victory that made him an international sporting figure and brought a huge welcome on his return to Australia. That year he was named Australian of the Year, becoming the first Aboriginal recipient of the award. His West Gippsland upbringing is a central part of his story, preceding the title fights and public recognition that made his name familiar far beyond the boxing ring.
